The Uninvited Plot Synopsis
Following Anna Ivers (Emily Browning), a teen who goes home from a party following an argument with her crush, Matt, in “The Uninvited,” Living in a boat house over a lake close to the family home is Anna’s dying mother. Anna’s mother is killed when the house collapses as a result of the fire. A few months later, Anna is recovering at a mental health facility after attempting suicide after the death of her mother. Dr. Silberling gives Anna the all-clear to go home after she recounts her memories of the moments preceding her mother’s passing. Steven Ivers, Anna’s father, picks her up, bringing them together once more.
When Anna gets back home, she discovers that Rachel Summers, her mother’s live-in nurse, has moved into their home and is dating her father (Elizabeth Banks). Upon learning that Anna did not get any of her letters, Anna is also reunited with her older sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel), who is soon upset. While Anna believes Rachel of being involved in the killing of her mother, Rachel tries to become friendly with her. Anna has nightmares that suggest her mother’s death was not an accident. The two sisters immediately come to the conclusion that Rachel is attempting to split their family apart after she tells Alex about her concerns about Rachel.
Anna runs across Matt while visiting the boat house, and he wants to tell her something about the night her mother passed away. Rachel, however, interrupts them. Anna arranges a meeting with Matt in the town so she may find out the truth. But Matt never shows up at the agreed-upon location. Regarding Matt’s passing, Anna experiences a nightmare. The next morning, Matt’s body is found along the lake. Since Matt was probably aware of the truth regarding Rachel’s participation in their mother’s death, Anna and Alex believe she killed Matt. Rachel threatens to send Anna back to the mental hospital if the girls look into her background. The sisters resolve to expose Rachel for all time once Steve departs for a business meeting.

The girls discover that Rachel has a new name after looking through her past. After doing some research, Anna and Alex come across a news story about Mildred Kemp, a nanny who murdered the kids she was assigned to watch after developing a romantic obsession with their widower father. As a result, Anna and Alex think Mildred Kemp, who was never apprehended by the police, is truly Rachel. The sisters want to gather evidence against Rachel and call the police to prevent her from destroying their family while their father departs town on business. Rachel, however, learns about their scheme and gives Alex drugs.
Anna makes her way out of the house and to the police station, where she speaks with Sheriff Emery about her theory and the proof, a pearl necklace that belonged to Mildred. Anna is found by Rachel, who poisons her, despite Sheriff Emery’s assurances that he will assist her. Rachel is getting ready to kill Anna when Anna is brought back to her house. However, Alex uses a knife to assault Rachel as Anna collapses. Alex has killed Rachel and dumped the body when Anna awakens. When Steven gets home, the girls are covered in blood. Rachel allegedly attempted to assassinate Anna and Alex. Steven, however, points out to Anna that Alex perished in the fire along with her mother. Alex vanishes, indicating that Anna had been seeing her sister in her head the entire time. Anna finally remembers what happened that fateful night as her memories suddenly return.

Anna’s memories of the night her mother passed away ultimately emerge during the climax. She recalls entering her home after leaving the party only to hear unusual noises coming from her father’s chamber. While her mother was alone in the boat house recovering from her illness, Anna saw Steven having sex with Rachel. As a result, Anna walked to the boat house and filled a water can with petrol. Together with her father and Rachel, she intended to set the house on fire. However, the sisters quarrelled when Alex showed up. A candle dropped onto the petrol stream after Anna accidentally left the tap slightly open, setting the house on fire.
Anna left the house just as it was about to collapse as Alex attended to her mother. Because of this, Anna’s mother and sister perished in the fire, leaving her with a great deal of guilt that most likely seemed as an Alex hallucination. Anna holds Rachel partially responsible for the demise of her family. Thus, these emotions appear as nightmares that imply Rachel was responsible for her mother’s demise. Anna is ultimately returned to the mental hospital, where she informs Dr. Silberling that she has completed her mission. It follows that Anna must have known about the events leading up to her mother’s passing, if not consciously. Since she only remembered seeing Rachel have an affair with her father, which precipitated the episode that resulted in her inadvertently killing her mother and sister, she chose Rachel as her target.
Who Is Mildred Kemp?
Anna discovers that Rachel has changed her name after researching her past. Mildred Kemp, a nanny who murdered her charges, is who Anna thinks Rachel is. This is refuted in the closing scenes when Steven admits that he was aware that Rachel had changed her name. She was assaulted by an abusive ex-boyfriend. She so changed her name in order to prevent him from pursuing her. In the last scenes of the film, Anna goes back to the mental hospital and meets her former ward flatmate there. The pearl necklace is owned by her neighbour, which makes Anna believe Rachel is Mildred Kemp.
The nameplate on the neighbor’s ward is revealed in the closing scene, proving that she is the genuine Mildred. It is implied that Anna had heard Mildred’s tale and that her mental state caused her to imagine Rachel using her family as a stand-in for Rachel. The discovery of Mildred strongly suggests that Anna suffers from a psychotic disorder or mental illness that is related to events that occurred before her mother’s passing. But Anna’s mother’s passing turns out to be the trigger that sends her over the edge. Additionally, because of the parallels between Rachel and Mildred, Anna targets her father’s new lover out of concern that she would ruin her family, for which Anna is to blame. As a result, the narrative comes full circle, causing viewers to understand that Anna is accountable for ruining her family, whether voluntarily or involuntarily.
